Field Day Showcases Champion Delungra Land Manager

15 October, 2009
The Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA, Macintyre Development Unit (MDU) 2000 and GWYMAC Landcare would like to congratulate the deserved 2009 winners of the MDU Black-Woods Shield and Resource Management Competition, John and Jenny Gamper of “Pinetrees”, Delungra.
The competition, which is in its 22nd year and this year is themed “Keeping the Land in Trust”, recognises excellence and innovation in land management in the Macintyre Valley and culminates in a field day held on the competition winner’s property.

The Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA has supported the MDU Black-Woods Shield and Resource Management Competition and Field Day for the past 5 years as the event is directly in line with the aims of the CMA – to encourage and acknowledge landholders who are successfully working to find a balance between sustainability and productivity. The Field Day also provides information to equip landholders and the community with the knowledge and skills to make better natural resource management decisions.

John and Jenny Gamper were the winners of the Primary Producer Award at the 2009 Landcare and Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA Regional Awards. The Gampers’ whole-of-farm management, based on land capability, embraces paddock subdivision and piped stock water for grazing management and better soil health.

The Gampers’ monitor their pasture, control soil erosion for improved water quality and protect habitat for biodiversity conservation. The enterprise is based on sustainability for the future. The Gampers were also nominated for NSW farmers of the year as a result of their commitment to Landcare.

The 2009 MDU Black-Woods Shield and Resource Management Competition and Field Day will be held on the Gampers' property “Pinetrees”, Delungra on Friday 23rd October. The key note speaker will be Greg Chappell from Shannonvale, Glen Innes, who will be discussing “Soil health from a landholder’s perspective and the use of compost”.

This year’s Field Day features a property tour, native vegetation management, rotational grazing and water reticulation.
