Welcome to the Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA

Classes to show farmers how to identify grasses

26 October, 2009
Farmers around the region will be given the opportunity to boost their knowledge of grass species in their area and the role they play in the environment and productivity, through a series of field days hosted by the Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA and NSW Industry & Investment (formerly NSW DPI) next week.
The Grass Identification Paddock Field Days, which are being held next week at Warialda, Inverell, Tenterfield and Uralla, will focus on the use of particular species for managing saline lands, inform participants about the role of perennial vegetation in preventing and managing salinity, and the role of perennial grasses in preventing degradation of saline sites.

While there is a clear salinity theme to the field days, landholders will also be trained in grass identification and the uses of grasses and groundcover in maximising moisture retention from a rainfall event – when rain does eventually fall - and will inform landholders about grass species in their area that are undesirable or have the potential to become pests.

Farmers and community members who attend the field days will be given the first copies of a new, full-colour booklet called Grasses of the Border Rivers-Gwydir Catchments of NSW as the booklet will be launched at the events. The native and exotic species included in the booklet will be identified in the paddock at the workshops. Perennial species that can be used for salinity management will be highlighted in the ‘Management’ section of the Grasses of the Border Rivers-Gwydir Catchments of NSW booklet and will also be identified at the field days.

The Grass Identification Paddock Field Days will also provide landholders with an opportunity to share their own experiences in managing saline land and which grass species they consider to be the most beneficial.

The Grass Identification Paddock Field Days will be held at Warialda on 3 November, Inverell on 4 November, Tenterfield on 5 November and Uralla on 13 November. The Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA invites all interested landholders and community members to come along to the Field Days and enjoy complimentary morning tea and BBQ lunch.
